Our Story
Hi, I'm Leilani Sinclair
Founder of Leilani Sinclair Psychotherapy
Leilani Sinclair is a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT) and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). She maintains a private practice in Los Angeles, California, while also serving as a Clinical Associate with Dr. Kenneth M. Adams & Associates in Michigan. Leilani works extensively with individuals struggling with sex addiction, as well as their partners and couples navigating recovery.
Passionate about improving access to high-quality therapeutic support for Adult Children of Sex Addicts (ACSAs), Leilani is co-authoring a workbook with Dr. Kenneth M. Adams titled Unburdening Adult Children of Sex Addicts: Disclosure, Impact, and Amends Guidelines for Parents of ACSAs and the ACSAs Themselves. Last year, she collaborated with Dr. Adams to develop and introduce a clinical protocol designed to guide parents through the process of making ACSA-centered disclosures and amends, fostering healing and recovery for their adult children.
Leilani’s integrative approach to therapeutic work draws from a diverse range of psychodynamic trainings, workshops, and education involving trauma-informed therapy, adolescent self-image and empowerment, parental alienation and estrangement, EMDR, mentalization, sex/pornography addiction, substance abuse addiction, and grief and loss.
She has received extensive training in working with children and parents to navigate difficult times such as divorce, custody disputes, and family crises. Leilani also works with adults seeking to heal from childhood experiences involving parental conflict and divorce. In August 2018, she presented her master’s thesis at a conference in London—Moving Upstream: Family Separation Clinic and European Association of Parental Alienation Practitioners. Titled “Therapy Contraindicated: The Treatment Challenges of Working with Severely Alienated Children,” her thesis highlighted the negative impact children face during high-conflict parental divorce and provided practical recommendations that therapists can follow in these difficult situations, based on the latest evidence-based research.
Leilani is a Preferred Provider for the Overcoming Enmeshment certification program, a licensed EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) clinician, and a certified practitioner of the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP).
She has also earned a basic-level Mentalization certification jointly offered by the Anna Freud Center in London and the Menninger Clinic at Harvard Medical Center for the treatment of individuals with borderline characteristics. A psychodynamic approach to strengthening insight and cognition, mentalization has been shown to be effective in treating clients with borderline traits, emotional dysregulation, and epistemic distrust.
Leilani works with individuals and couples of all gender identities and orientations, including heterosexual and LGBTQIA clients.
She began her clinical work in 2016 as a trainee at Counseling West, an affordable nonprofit counseling center in Sherman Oaks. Leilani earned her B.A. in History from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and her master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute. She is licensed to practice in California and Michigan.
